How do I adjust my receipt printer margins on my Windows PC?

If your receipts come out too long, off-center, really small, or really big, then your print margins need to be adjusted on your PC. Follow these steps to check your margins.

Check browser settings

For Internet Explorer

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click on the dropdown arrow next to the printer icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
  3. Choose Print > Page Setup.
  4. Change the Paper Size to 72mm x receipt.
  5. Change the Left, Right, Top and Bottom margins to "0.2"
  6. Remove any characters in the header and footer fields by selecting Empty.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Try printing a receipt from a client's Purchases screen.

For Firefox

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. Go to File > Page Setup.
  3. Click the three line icon in the upper right, and select Print.
  4. On the Print Preview page select Page Setup in the upper left.
  5. On the Format & Options tab make sure "Shrink to fit page width" is checked.
  6. Select the Margins & Header/Footer tab.
  7. Top, Right, Left, and Bottom margins should be set to "0.2."
  8. Set all Headers & Footers to "--blank--"
  9. Press OK to save.

If receipts are still printing incorrectly, follow the steps below to check your system's margin settings.

Note: Chrome does not support automatic receipt printing and is not recommended for printing receipts.

Check printer margin settings

Windows 7

  • For TSP 100 Printer:
    • Go to: Windows Start Menu > Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
      • Right-click on the Star 100 Cutter (TSP 143) and choose Printer Properties.
      • In the Advanced tab, select Print directly to the printer.
      • In the Device Settings tab, make sure:
        • FRICTION is set to: 72mm x Receipt
        • Paper Type is set to: Receipt
        • Page Cut Type is set to: Partial Cut
        • Document Cut Type is set to: Partial Cut
        • Cash Drawer 1 - Pulse Width is set to: 200 milliseconds
        • Cash Drawer 1 is set to: Document Top
      • In the General tab, click Printing Preferences at the bottom.
      • In Printing Preferences, click on the Paper/Quality tab and choose "Automatically Select" as the Paper source. For Media, choose "normal type paper."
      • Click Advance. Change the Paper Size to "72mm x Receipt."
      • Click OK. Click OK again. Click OK a third time.
  • For TSP 600 (643) Printer:
    • Go to the Windows 7 Start menu > Control Panel > Devices and Printer.
      • Right-click on the Star TSP 600 (643) and choose Printer Properties.
      • In the Ports tab, make sure that "Enable bidirectional support" is checked.
      • In the Advanced tab, select "Print directly to the printer."
      • In the Device Settings tab, make sure "72mm x Receipt" is selected for the Form To Tray Assignment. Set the Page Cut Type to "Partial Cut." Change the second Cash Drawer 1 to "Open Before Printing."
      • In the General tab, click the Preferences button at the bottom.
      • In Printing Preferences, click on the Paper/Quality tab and choose "Friction" as the Paper source. For Media, choose "normal type paper."
      • Click on the Advance button. Change the Paper Size to "72mm x Receipt."
      • Click OK. Click OK again. Click OK a third time.
  • For TSP 650 Printer:  
    • Go to the Start menu > Control Panel > Hardware > Printers
      • Right-click on the Star TSP 650 Raster Printer and choose Printer Properties.
      • In the Ports tab, make sure that "Enable bidirectional support" is checked. In the Advanced tab, select "Print directly to the printer."
      • In the Device Settings tab, make sure:
        • To select "72mm x Receipt" for the paper type.
        • In the Installable Options section, Page Cut Type should be set to "Partial Cut/Partial Cut."
        • If you have a cash drawer, set the Peripheral Unit Type to "Cash Drawer," and the Peripheral Unit 1 to "Document Top"
      • In the General tab, click the Printing Preferences button at the bottom.
      • In Printing Preferences, click on the Paper/Quality tab and choose "Friction" as the Paper source. For Media, choose "normal type paper."
      • Click on the Advance button. Change the Paper Size to "72mm x Receipt."
      • Click OK. Click OK again. Click OK a third time.

Windows Vista

  • TSP 100 Printer:
    • Go to the Vista Start menu > Control Panel > Hardware > Printers
      • Right click on the Star TSP Cutter (TSP 143) and choose Printer Properties.
      • In the Advanced tab, select "Print directly to the printer."
      • In the Device Settings tab, make sure:
        • FRICTION is set to: 72mm x Receipt
        • Paper Type is set to: Receipt
        • Page Cut Type is set to: Partial Cut
        • Document Cut Type is set to: Partial Cut
        • Cash Drawer 1 - Pulse Widthis set to: 200 milliseconds
        • Cash Drawer 1 is set to: Open After Printing
      • In the General tab, click the Printing Preferences button at the bottom.
      • In Printing Preferences, click on the Paper/Quality tab and choose "Friction" as the Paper source. For Media, choose "normal type paper."
      • Click on the Advance button. Change the Paper Size to "72mm x Receipt."
      • Click OK. Click OK again. Click OK a third time.
  • TSP 600 (643) Printer:
    • Go to the Vista Start menu > Control Panel > Hardware > Printers
      • Right click on the Star TSP 600 (643) Raster Printer and choose Properties.
      • In the Ports tab, make sure that "Enable bidirectional support" is unchecked.
      • In the Advanced tab, select "Print directly to the printer."
      • In the Device Settings tab, make sure "72mm x Receipt" is selected for the Form To Tray Assignment. Set the Page Cut Type to "Partial Cut." Change the second Cash Drawer 1 to "Open Before Printing." 
      • In the General Tab, click the Printing Preferences button at the bottom.
      • In Printing Preferences, click on the Paper/Quality tab and choose "Friction" as the Paper source. For Media, choose "normal type paper."
      • Click on the Advance button. Change the Paper Size to "72mm x Receipt."
      • Click OK. Click OK again. Click OK a third time.
  • TSP 650 Printer:
    • Go to the Vista Start menu > Control Panel > Hardware > Printers
      • Right-click on the Star TSP 650 Raster Printer and choose Properties.
      • In the Ports tab, make sure that "Enable bidirectional support" is unchecked.
      • In the Advanced tab, select "Print directly to the printer."

        • The Cut Action section, EndPage/End Doc is set to "Partial Cut/Partial Cut"
        • If you have a cash drawer, set the Peripheral Unit Type to "Cash Drawer," and the Peripheral Unit 1 to "Document Top"
      • In the General tab, click the Printing Preferences button at the bottom.
      • In Printing Preferences, click on the Paper/Quality tab and choose "Friction" as the Paper source. For Media, choose "normal type paper."
      • Click on the Advance button. Change the Paper Size to "72mm x Receipt."
      • Click OK. Click OK again. Click OK a third time.

  • TSP 100 Printer:

      • Right click on the Star TSP 100 Cutter (TSP 143) and choose Properties.

      • In the Device Settings tab, make sure:

Note: In the Ports tab, ensure that "Enable bidirectional support" is checked.

  • TSP 600 (643) Printer:
    • Go to the Start menu.
      • Select Settings > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes.
      • Right click on the Star TSP643 Raster Printer and choose Properties.
      • In the Ports tab, make sure that "Enable bidirectional support" is unchecked.
      • In the Advanced tab, select "Print directly to the printer."
      • In the Device Settings tab, make sure "72mm x Receipt" is selected for paper type.
      • In the Print Options tab, in the Cut Action section, EndPage/End Doc should be set to Partial Cut/Partial Cut. If you have a cash drawer, in the cash drawer section, for Drawer 1, select Document Top for Action/Timing dropdown. Click Apply and OK.
      • In the General tab, click the Printing Preferences button. Then click the Advanced button in the Star Raster Printer Advanced Options window.
      • In the dropdown for Paper Size, select "72mm x Receipt" then click OK. Click OK again to close Star Printing Preferences window.
      • Print a test page from the General tab by clicking the Print Test Page button. The printer will print out default settings. 
  • TSP 650 Printer:
    • Go to the Start menu.
      • Select Settings > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes.
      • Right click on the Star TSP650 Raster Printer and choose Properties.
      • In the Ports tab, make sure that "Enable bidirectional support" is unchecked.
      • In the Advanced tab, select "Print directly to the printer."
      • In the Device Settings tab, make sure:
        • "72mm x Receipt" is selected for paper the type.
        • The Cut Action section, End Page/End Doc is set to "Partial Cut/Partial Cut"
        • If you have a cash drawer, set the Peripheral Unit Type to "Cash Drawer," and the Peripheral Unit 1 to "Document Top"
      • In the General tab, click the Printing Preferences button. Then click the Advanced button in the Star Raster Printer Advanced Options window.
      • In the dropdown for Paper Size, select "72mm x Receipt" then click OK. Click Ok again to close Star Printing Preferences window.
      • Print a test page from the General tab by clicking the Print Test Page button. The printer will print out default settings.
